You will need only 3 ingredients. How awesomely simple is that? But before you get started, do read this blog thoroughly, and view the points hyperlinked below.
Ingredients required:
. Kahlwax 6702 (a vegan wax, you can substitute beeswax if you prefer but please note that the ratios may vary due to the consistency you prefer).
Equipment required – Gadgets to get you going
. Nitrile gloves, ohhhhh these have really saved the day for me.
. A good reliable scale preferably measuring 0,01g upwards, as essential oils are measured in grams and not in drops. A jewellery scale works well for small batches.
. A good reliable thermometre as things tend to get pretty hot. As a start, a reliable candy one should do the trick.
. Heat resistant measuring jugs eg. pyrex, lab beakers and/or stainless steel bowls/jugs for melting butters/oils etc. Preferably something with a spout for easy pouring.
. A water bath, and/or a bain-marie, and/or a double boiler.
. Silicone spatulas, steel spoons, steel/silicone whisks, and/or teaspoons for scooping, stirring, mixing, whisking, whipping and/or blending.
. Simply just use heat resistant glass, steel and/or silicone equipment, as it’s the easiest to work with, no snags at all.
. Paper towel for a good clean-up.
. Suitable heat resistant jars and/or containers for storage of your precious product.
. Pretty labels to label the fruit of your labour.
. Equipment can be sourced from a laboratory supplier, a catering equipment supplier, and/or online. Kindly note that you will have to see what is available in your area, and what suits you best.
This lip balm totals 10g, a very very minute amount. Below are the amounts and phases that you will need to weigh out.
Phase 1
. 2g Kahlwax 6702
. 4g Cocos Nucifera Oil
Phase 2
. 4g Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil
Now, the process of bringing all this lovely lippiness together, the method
. switch your scale on and set it to grams.
. weigh out all the ingredients in grams, remembering to tare the scale after each ingredient is added. Weigh out Phase 1, the Kahlwax 6702, and Cocos Nucifera Oil in one beaker as they will be first heated together.
. in a separate beaker weigh out Phase 2, the Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil.
. in a water bath, and/or bain-marie, and/or a double boiler gently melt the Kahlwax 6702, and Cocos Nucifera Oil until the ingredients are liquid. Kahlwax 6702 usually melts at about 56°C/65°C. Please make use of your thermometre here.
. now work fast, add the rest of Phase 2 ingredients, being the Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil, blend well, turn off the heat, remove beaker from the water bath immediately, and allow to cool for a few minutes to about 40°C while stirring gently. Stir gently so that you do not incorporate air into the product.
. once a very light trace is achieved, pour into a suitable heat resistant container.
. do not cover the container with the lid as condensation will build up within the container forming water droplets, thus contaminating the product.
. only place a lid on the product once it has totally cooled to room temperature.
. add a pretty label to the container of the fruit of your labour.
. remember to date your product and completely use within 1 month.
Mindful points
. be very careful not to get water into the beaker at all during this whole process, as it will spoil.
. monitor temperatures closely as the product contains wax and will harden relatively quickly once taken off the heat.
. if the product hardens before pouring, gently reheat to a pourable consistency and work fast.
. do not be tempted to stick the product into the fridge to cool, as your product will spoil, and will most probably become contaminated with food particles.
. be patient, everything will work out just fine if the process is planned well, and everything is laid out before hand, so as to avert any unnecessary dramas.
. always store all products under 25°C, in a cool dark place, away from sunlight.
. use product within 1 month of making it.
. adhere to good hygienic practices at all times.
. the product you make is for your personal use only, and not for retail purposes.
